Bose Companion 3 Series II Review
Bose is like the Apple of the speaker world. It is too expensive, and they spend much time on the design. Yes, Bose was much good with the design of this set. The sub-woofer is more compact than my Klipsch set, but just as powerful. The satellite speakers are much more compact, that is very beautiful. I actually very much prefer the small form factor of the satellite speakers to the Bose set. They do not take nearly as much space on my desk.
Another feature I really liked was the control pod. It is a small round control module as a hockey puck, which sits on the desk. The knob on top controls the volume of the set. A light touch on top, the sound of the set. And, near the bottom, you have a headphone jack and an audio-in jack for connecting external devices like a notebook computer, iPod, or whatever. The secondary audio input is a very useful feature that I wanted. My Klipsch set does not have (the new do, apparently).

There is not much for a set of speakers to look at. You take them, close them, and listen. The only real way to evaluate the speakers is how they sound and that is completely subjective. That said, I really dig these speakers sound. They deliver as much punch as my Klipsch set did, but from a smaller package.
I think part of the way they do is of course the design itself. The satellite speakers to the Companion 3 are small, while those on the Klipsch set were enormous. However, the Klipsch set had both a midrange and a tweeter in each satellite. The Bose satellites are very small and therefore have a speaker in each dome. The way they balance out the sound by moving more of the bass module, or sub-woofer.

If you look at the new Klipsch 2.1, each satellite is 35 watts and the sub is a full 130 watts with a 6.5-inch driver. That is certainly a lot of punch. The sound is set up more like a traditional surround sound unit, the sub is only the lowest bass and the satellites taking care of the mids and highs. The Bose unit, my ear telling me that the sub’s care or more of the midrange. What’s interesting is that Bose seems quite secretive about wattage ratings and some of the traditional ratings of their speakers. I can find in the manual is that the satellites are both 2-inch wide-range transducers and the sub has a 5.25-inch woofer.
The Bose set sounds fantastic. It packs as much punch as the Klipsch set, but from a smaller package that gives me more desk space. It packs big bass and the highs are crystal clear, so much so that you can fine details like guitar solos and to hear.
Well, this aspect is a bit questionable. The current Klipsch 2.1 set is around $ 160 now, while the Bose Companion 3 Series II running anywhere from $ 250 to $ 300. What you get for the extra coin? Yes, a smaller form factor. But above all, the Bose name.

Bose takes a card from Apple marketing. They price their products higher, which positions them as supposedly better than the others. Bose sets are quite good, but no, they are not necessarily better than everyone else. Yes, much of what you pay for marketing.
Conclusion
These are great speakers in every way. I recommend them to people who want high a good set of high-end computer speakers. That said, the price is too high, in my opinion. The Bose name is not sufficient reason for the high price tag for a set of 2.1 speakers to justify. For the value, I would still recommend the Klipsch set on the Bose. Yes, Klipsch speakers are much bigger and take up more space, but you’ll get the same quality sound for less money.
