ZVOX Mini Surround Sound System Review
We were knocked out of the original Zvox 315 “sound console” single-speaker surround system in 2004. In a field of tinny-sounding lifestyle speakers had the Zvox 315 The overwhelming advantages of substantial size and clever engineering. The 315 Zvox put on the map, but its imposing size makes it a hard sell for many people. This is where the new Zvox Mini is its brand to make: it is much smaller, uses the same power amp and has a small remote control. Both models were super simple to connect directly to TVs, PCs, laptops, portable players, and of course, iPods designed. The Zvox site sells the Mini for $ 199 – the same price as the 315.
The 315 is a simple box, but the Zvox Mini has a sense of style to. The front panel is gently curved, and the cabinet is of medium density fibreboard (MDF), a step out of the plastic cabinets of many similarly sized iPod speakers. The Mini is 13 cm wide, 3.3 high, 10 deep, and weighs seven pounds. It is available in three versions: black or silver paint suedelike or high-gloss white that will look nice with your iPod. Our sample came with a plastic remote control for volume control, but in a few months, Minis will be a flat credit-card remote control, the volume and muting functions controlled style ship.

The front panel has volume and PhaseCue controls, the latter determines the spread of the stereo surround sound. Turn it all the way to the left and the sound is almost mono, as you turn clockwise, the stereo spread gets wider and wider. Go too far with the PhaseCue processing and the sound is thin and hollow. We wound with the control to the center position and achieved satisfying soundstage width, projecting a good three or four feet on the sides from the Mini itself.
A curved, perforated metal grille protects the mini three 2.5-inch full-range driver, and in the closet, there’s a 4-by-6-inch oval woofer. The all-metal rear panel serves as a heat sink for the amplifiers and houses two minijack inputs (alternatively the second of which serve as a subwoofer output), a subwoofer volume control and a master switch. You do not need to go back to the Mini or off, however, it automatically comes to life when it detects a signal and returns to standby mode after several minutes of inactivity.

The Zvox Mini can be either fixed or variable outputs of virtually any audio source can be connected TV, PC, Laptop, DVD/CD player, iPod or MP3 player. All necessary cables are included. You can not find the digital inputs as to the much more expensive Yamaha YSP-800 and Polk Audio SurroundBar, but we never missed it. Zvox protect a rechargeable battery provides power supply ($ 50) and a beautifully designed porta party bags ($ 50) in the Mini, if you put it on the road.
The Zvox Mini has the rich, full tonal balance of a much larger speakers, DVD of War of the Worlds to the Penguins sounded good. The Mini’s dialogue was articulate and surprisingly full-bodied. Sure, the rampaging alien tripods in Worlds not the dynamic impact or room-shaking power that we learn of the better home theater-in-a-box packages, but not the Mini have the tangle of cables and higher price tags are endemic to this systems. The Sound Matters Mainstage HD single-speaker surround system was on a par with the Mini, but over longer listening sessions made the lively sound of the smaller competitor us jump more when we saw the fog DVD. The small plant can be surprisingly loud, but it is best on a mild level.

Excels with music, the Mini’s rich sound, the most expensive iPod speakers we’ve heard so far. ($ 349 Apple iPod Hi-Fi speakers.) We have no Zvox 315 have on hand for a direct comparison, but it’s safe to say the larger speaker louder and produce substantially more bass. If what you seek, the Zvox 315 the better choice would be, but the Zvox Mini is no slouch, the remote control and is easier to use.
