Enhanced Narnia E-Book

If you enjoy the books from the addition of multimedia magic? Narnia may hold the answer. HarperCollins has released an enhanced e-book on CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. The Voyage of the Dawn before the film version of the same, the book is a perfect test for the promise and shortcomings of the extended e-book market. The Voyage of the Dawn is not an app, but a multimedia EPUB book. EPUB is as close as we have a universal e-book standard. This makes it immediately multi-platform and multi-device – no need for separate IOS or Android code, store or approval. All you need is an application that can read on these platforms, EPUB, and a touchscreen. EPUB books can not be read on the Kindle, but the Kindle is not a multimedia device with a touchscreen, so no loss anyway.

The book is for iBooks now, after the press release, “is a number of handheld multimedia reader and touch-screen devices available” – ie: the forthcoming Nook color like on Sony BRAVIA KDL-52VE5 LCD HDTV, and possibly other Android-tablets. On all platforms, it costs $ 10. Sometimes improvement of multimedia e-books seems like a solution in search of a problem. In general, the readers are not clamoring for better books. Writers and publishers do not always understand, and it is not always well pleased to have in themselves.

Lewis’ Narnia books are different. They have a well-established readership and are largely popular with adults and children. You have already TransMedia, the spin-off games and movies away, the writer estate is ready to develop and approve new media companies, including HarperCollins and Disney have the tools and incentives to develop them. The serial character of the books that are in turn the books of continuity and space to develop.

What is more visually appealing and conceptually encyclopedic character of the books means that adding maps, illustrations, animations, reference guides and deadlines actually very useful aids. could add in audio readings and commentary, essays, and you have something to suit a deluxe DVD edition of a beloved book.

The judge is the standard against which we should e-books improved. The Voyage of the Dawn does not quite get there. I checked the iBooks cost version, the $ 10, $ 2 more than the $ 8 “non-enhanced” version. It gets the Pauline Baynes illustrations and maps, animations and reference lexicon right. This material alone is worth the extra $ 2

But “read along” a promising feature, with the help of audio and audio book outstanding Shakespearean actors Derek Jacobi’s reading of the book is hopelessly crippled, and only the first paragraphs of each chapter. If you want to hear the whole thing, you have to buy the individual audio book, which costs another $ 17 from iTunes. Putting snippets of audio feels in the e-book at such a terrible tease.

Again and again, improved e-books bump up against rights that have already been sold and assigned. The video content, including an animated timeline summary of the story is solid, but when you consider the e-book is as cross-promotion intended with the film, it’s sad that it did not even preview images from the film. It is a worthwhile task for what it is. But it is ultimately frustrating because the potential is for an integrated object on the video-capable e-readers like the iPad Nook color and so clear, at least for me. The publishing industry is so tied – the media streams so fragmented legal and functional – that the opportunities to study for a clear case, an example that everyone can get a standard point wasting time and again.
