Toshiba 55UX600U LED HDTV Review

The 55UX600U is one of three new Toshiba HD-TVs in its X600 series, the thin sections, boast low power consumption, and a truckload of Internet applications. Priced at $ 2,399.99, in this 55-inch TV, Edge lit-supply LED backlight technology, a high contrast ratio and deep blacks, but the trade-off is uneven screen uniformity and significant backlight seepage, which detract from both the set’s otherwise solid performance. And while the 55UX600U is relatively thin, it is still almost an inch thicker than Samsung and LG’s LED Edge-lit offerings.

Design and Features

The 55UX600U features thick glossy black bezels (2.5 inches on the top and sides and 3.5 inches on the ground) that the transition similar to a clear, plaid pattern uses the model to 46-inch Toshiba Regza 46SV670U only without silver highlights. The 54.6-inch, 1,920-by-1 0.080-pixel panel is protected with a glossy coating, but not over the smooth edge to edge glass design that you are with the 46SV670U. The case measures 2 inches in depth, which is certainly thinner than the average CCFL-backlit HDTV, but it is almost an inch thicker than the Samsung UN40B7000 and LG 42SL90, both also edge-lit LED backlight. The football-shaped stand provides a solid basis for the panel, although it lacks pivot capability. Two down-firing 10-watt speakers hidden, hidden behind the lower panel are loud and provide decent bass response, if the Dynamic Bass Boost function is enabled. Powered by a Audyssey EQ audio processor delivers a reasonable virtual surround sound experience, but there is no match for a true multi-channel audio system.

Five function keys and a power switch on the right side of the case is, the buttons are used to access and navigate the various settings screens. The menu system is easy to follow and offers separate submenus for images, sounds, applications, settings, and setup options. Besides the basics (brightness, contrast, backlight, color and hue), there are advanced settings, where you turn on features such as DynaLight (a black level enhancer), film stabilization, (which smooths out shaky video), DNR (Dynamic Noise Reduction) and ClearFrame (120Hz anti-blur). There is also an expert mode where you can optimize red, blue and green color levels, and you can use the screen ColorMaster further finetune hue and saturation. Preset picture modes are Standard, Sport (high-contrast bright), movie (dark, low contrast), white (high contrast), PC (for use with HDMI and VGA inputs) and AutoView used (an ambient light sensor for automatic information obtained luminance settings). Audio adjustments include bass, treble, Dynamic Boost, and voice enhancement, and there is a Dolby Digital Dynamic Range Control, to a more even that the audio output ensure (albeit flatter) Sound is compressed.

The 46-key remote control is 8.5-inches long and has a black face silver to a housing. Performance and image quality

After a basic darkroom calibration with samples from the DisplayMate diagnostic program, the 55UX600U turned in admirable contrast ratio of 3,910:1. For comparison was the Samsung and LG Edge-lit LED models are much lower contrast ratios of 924:1 and 1,498:1, while the Regza 46SV670U that uses a full array of LEDs for backlighting, 2,140:1 measured. In my tests, the color rendering of the 55UX600U was very good. In terms of accuracy, red and blue were spot on. Greens were a bit too powerful, but not enough to make a difference in the overall color quality. Avatar on Blu-ray appeared crisp and detailed, with no signs of artifacts. Similarly, satellite TV has 1080i sharp and colorful as standard definition TV. The ACED 55UX600U the HD HQV noise and Jaggie tests and did very well on the standard-def tests, as well. Although the equipment had stumbled on the noise reduction test, adjustment of the DNR (dynamic noise reduction) to “Center” helped the set a the note, without any artifacts. Also, very wide viewing angles for an edge-lit HDTV.

My biggest gripe with this set has to do with screen uniformity, there are several hot spots that were clearly in dark scenes, almost as if someone was shining a flashlight on the panel. In addition, in my tests, LED backlight bleed was significant at each corner and particularly disturbing when watching movies in a dark room. The LG 42SL90 produced some backlight bleed, but the problem is more pronounced.

On the positive side, the 55UX600U one of the most energy-efficient HDTVs to PC Labs is taken. It consumes an average of 90 watts when displaying Blu-ray content with our calibrated settings. This is considerably lower than the smaller 40-inch Samsung UN40B7000 (142 watts) and only slightly lower than the 42-inch LG 42SL90 (102 watts). The works of an operating cost around 1.15 $ a month (on the basis of the 2008 national average), and deserves our HDTV GreenTech seal of approval.

If you are on the market for a large, edge-lit LED, there is no denying the fact that Toshiba 55UX600U crisp, noise-free HD and SD image quality. And a high contrast ratio provides vibrant colors and deep blacks. This set is also easy on your electric bill and offers a wealth of interactive Web services. But uneven screen uniformity and backlight leakage and make it a bad choice if you do, plan a lot of dark room movie. If you can live with a less smooth design and to do without the Web, is Vizio’s 55-inch VF551XVT, a much better big-screen deal.
