Can a phone save your life?
Chronic health problems
If you have a chronic, serious health problem, your mobile phone can save your life. This is not simply because you, or a person who comes to your aid, can swiftly phone for an ambulance with your phone. You can also place vital facts about your medical condition and history on the phone. If an ambulance takes you to an unfamiliar hospital, a doctor can use these facts to help with emergency treatment.
Alarm
Many people take regular medication. Some of this is necessary to preserve life. But no matter how important medication may be, people forget to take it. This is especially true if a patient has a mental health and awareness problem.
A mobile phone can remind you to take your medicine. Set the alarm on a phone such as the blackberry Bold for the time at which you need to take your pills. A ringtone will then give you the necessary reminder.
First Aid
A first aid app on your mobile phone can help save your life. Alternatively, you can use your phone to surf the Internet and find first aid advice.
First aid via your mobile phone may sound far-fetched. But a US film producer lay trapped for two and a half days in a lift when an earthquake struck in Haiti in January 2010. The man used a first aid app he had on his phone to help him treat head and foot injuries. He was also concerned about falling into shock and unconsciousness, so he used his phone’s alarm to stay alert and awake.
You can download a First Aid and Health app for the BlackBerry mobile phone. Apps also include a Complete Home First Aid Course.
GPS
The GPS feature of a mobile phone can help save your life if you’re lost in potentially dangerous territory. GPS, combined with a service such as BlackBerry Maps will identify your location. You can then phone for help and give your exact position; use the map to find the best way to safety; or obtain precise directions to your destination.
Opposite
There’s another angle to the issue of whether a phone can save your life. It’s the exact opposite, in fact: a phone can kill you.
You increase your chances of having a road accident 23 times if you text while driving. And if you choose to use your phone without a hands-free kit while at the wheel, you increase the risk of an accident by four times.
