Teddy Bear from Fujitsu

Teddy Bears are not cuddly creatures just for children at bedtime. Fujitsu Labs has a prototype teddy bear for adults, which is packed with some sophisticated hardware and can interact with and respond to human development. The teddy bear is a “social robot with personality,” and can perform simple gestures, eye contact and small talk to make. The hope is it for “Robot Therapy in Geriatrics for patients who use the suffering from dementia, says Fujitsu.

Despite innovative approach Pleo and technology capability, the robot has not really become a mainstream sensation largely because it was positioned as a toy.

Fujitsu robot teddy bear comes with lofty ambitions. The robot teddy bear can be plugged into a PC with a USB port. Sensors stuffed into helping make some gestures such as raising one of his furry hands in response to external stimuli.

The Bears have built a miniature camera in its nose, so that they wake up automatically from hibernation, when they sense a person in the vicinity and may in their direction. A voice synthesizer inside the device, it can channel the voice of a little boy. The sound is projected from an internal speaker and synchronized to the robot behavior.

The robot bears are capable of up to 300 patterns of movement including raising his arms and looked down and kicking his feet. The movement with a display of “emotions” are combined to create happiness, sadness and anger signal, says Fujitsu. And since the robot can be connected to the PC, new movements are recorded and displayed like on Panasonic SC-HTB10 Sound Bar System.

What makes this robot interesting, says Fujitsu, is that it is interactive and real in a world filled with increasingly virtual interactions. The bears can be played with and are likely to be easily integrated into people’s lives, the company said. Fujitsu hopes to help develop his teddy bear “robot therapy,” a way to use robots to overcome challenges or problems of human-like animals are used to cheer up patients in some hospitals today.
