We live in an age of retro. Chrysler Hemi engine has cried again with a vengeance, Peter Jackson is busily at his coiffed King Kong and Polk Audio is reintroducing the legendary Monitor line. The original mid-’70s-era Monitor Series set a high standard for performance and put Polk on the map to help make it one of the greatest orators in the United States. The monitor 30, the new lineup’s entry-level shelf model, can not have the same effect, but it’s certainly a solid value in the compact class.Standing 11 inches high and 7 cm wide, and assembled with a metal hanger for easy wall mounting, the styling of the 9-pound Polk Audio Monitor 30 is not too far from the classic box-speaker form, but the bright titanium curved baffle and grille add flair of the 21 Century. After you remove the grill, you’ll notice, the engineers have inverted the typical high-on-top-woofer-on-the-bottom orientation. The Model 30 is available in two styles: faux cherry veneer or black anodized.

The spokesman for the double set of heavy-duty connectors offer the possibility of bi-wiring (fixing two sets of wire to each speaker) or amping (using two amp channels to drive each monitor 30). The complete monitoring system does not suffer from the kind of midbass deficit we hear so many small subwoofer satellite systems. Bass-heavy CDs like Morphine’s The Night sounded wonderfully full and weighty. The agreement between the 30s and the PSW10 subwoofer blend was perfectly executed, and the pitch definition was right on the money. Skillfully supported by the PSW10, the 30 sounds like a much larger speakers.

We practiced the next screen home theater system with the talents of Pearl Harbor DVD. The sounds of propeller aircraft boost their engines broke out with fury, and later, the aircraft appeared to fall on our heads. As the Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor, the violent explosions do not confuse the monitors. The speakers’ dynamic impact and power are state of the art for a system in this price class. One drawback: The film is lush score sounded a little rough compared to what we expensive of Polk and NHT speakers hear.

A discussion of the Energy has Act6 speaker package surprised us. The sound of the two systems was similar than we expected.
