ZVOX 325 Review

Zvox President Tom Hannah us first so with the big sound in a small package amazed back when this magazine was known as a boot. Tom was with Cambridge SoundWorks at the time, and we published the first review of the Micro Works 2.1 channel speaker system.

ZVOX 325 Review

The Zvox 325 is just as remarkable, we’re amazed at the room-filling sound it delivers. The self-powered system is ideal for environments where it is impractical or impossible for a conventional surround-sound array deploy. The sturdy, magnetically shielded cabinet is easily one LCD monitor support for near field listening, too.

There are three 3.25-inch main speakers, a 4×6-inch subwoofer and a three-channel amplifier in 17-inch-wide box, but the synchronized Zvox 325 projects an amazingly wide sound stage thanks to technology PhaseCue. The bi-amp system uses a standard stereo input (left + right), it mixes and takes it in the middle, mono speaker. The same signal amplifier via a second channel (and one crossover) routed to the subwoofer.

The third channel amplifier for the left and right speakers is used, and that’s where it becomes strange: Zvox wire these speakers out of phase. This would normally result in a very localized hollow, sound, but it has the opposite effect in the Zvox 325, thanks to the center speaker and a plastic tube connecting the left and right speakers. Out-of-phase right-channel audio from the left speaker is performing with “normal” left-channel audio, and the same phenomenon, mixed in the right channel. Close your eyes and you’d swear you heard a pair of speakers standing two feet apart.

The Zvox 325 no decoder for DTS or Dolby Digital, it still has not six discrete analog inputs for decoded 5.1-channel surround sound, so it is very effective for the fool in your ears audio events perceived as originating behind the head. Yamaha YSP-800 is far better for the guests, but it costs more than twice as much and must be supplemented by a subwoofer. The Zvox 325 delivers outstanding performance with movies, and it sounds even better with music.
