CherryPal launches a $99 netbook
The last I saw of netbook CherryPal was the 10-inch CherryPal Bing since early 2009. It was pretty much a me-too “netbook with your usual details, including a 1024 x 600 pixel display and an Atom N270 CPU. But now CherryPal is back with two machines that are truly out from the crowd.
First is the CherryPal Africa, to sell the company for 99 euros. What you can for under a hundred dollars? Not much.
The AU has a 7-inch, 800 x 480 display, a low-power 400-MHz processor and either Linux or Windows CE. The laptop comes with 256 MB RAM, 2 GB of storage, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and a 1800mAh battery. Despite the African name, I’m pretty sure that this machine is identical to one of those cheap Chinese version of Mini-laptops, which we see to have pop-up time and again for the last year or two.
Still $ 99 is a pretty good price if you only want a portable device with a Web browser, WiFi and a keyboard.
The company is also selling a new 13.3-inch laptop confusingly called the CherryPal Bing. You know, like the previous 10″ model. Despite the large screen and full-size keyboard, the $ 389 laptop has very netbook-like information, including the 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g WLAN and Windows XP Home.
The Bing weighs about 3 pounds and has a 5-hour battery.
