Samsung 1GHz Hummingbird mobile CPU

Samsung today announced a new ARM processor, which set the direction for the future of smartphones. Hummingbird nicknames, the design is the same Cortex-A8 architecture as the chip in the iPhone but 3GS clocks at 1 GHz, much higher than the 833MHz its previous best. The performance is supported by a smaller, more energy-efficient 45-nanometer process as well as some custom circuitry designed to handle the load.

In driving performance, the company says the processor can have up to 2 billion instructions per second, but consumes only 640mW of power and not more than 1 V voltage. As the Cortex-A8 Chip, Hummingbird is a dual-issue (two instructions at a time) processor with media specific extensions, known as the Neon, which can speed up common audio and video tasks.

The customers do not have a name for the processor, although Samsung makes clear, it looks Hummingbird reach “advanced mobile devices,” if it is in a standard system-on-chip processors. Apple is one of the major customers of Samsung for ARM processors, although it usually underclocked the processor for the iPhone to the heat in the narrow enclosure.
