The i-SOBOT takes home 2008 Robot of the Year Award
Takara Tomy’s Omnibot 17 i-SOBOT has been recognized by Guinness than the smallest mass-produced robot of its kind and was crowned Japan’s 2008 Robot of the Year. The annual Robot of the Year award was presented by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in 2006 to promote the development of robots in many industries.
The grand awards this year went to i-SOBOT because of advanced technology, reasonable price – 30000 yen (about $ 300) and high entertainment value. I-SOBOT is equipped with 17 mini-servo motors and a series of gyro sensors to maintain balance. This robot weighs only 350 grams (12 oz) and is 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) tall.
Among the cool things you can do this humanoid, are on foot, air-guitar playing, dancing the hula, and 200 other moves. You can use this robot with a remote control or by using voice commands. Four AAA batteries you get about an hour of use, which is not so bad, given the nature of these robots. In addition to the Grand Prize in this year’s small to medium-sized venture Award was to “Book Time”, an automatic page-turning robots developed by Nishizawa electronic measuring instruments.
